When the colder weather hits in the late Fall and Winter, we naturally stay indoors more. While staying inside where it’s warm protects our skin from the cold air and damaging wind, our indoor heating systems aren’t doing any favors for our skin.
Central Heating can dry out our skin
In order to keep our homes warm throughout the colder months, we turn to our trusty home heating systems. And while they do a great job at keeping us warm, they also blast hot, dry air that can dry out and damage our skin. Even a roaring fire in the fireplace or from a wood-burning stove can dry out our skin, so it’s important to combat that dry air to keep skin healthy.
What can we do to protect our skin from dry heat?
There are several ways to combat the dry heat and keep your skin healthy and looking its best:
Switch off your heater when you can
Of course you need to keep yourself and your family warm. But by keeping the heat low when appropriate (when you’re not home, when you’re sleeping), you may be able to avoid the air in your home becoming too dry (and it will save you money on your heating bills as well!)
Use a humidifier
If you can get more humidity in the air, your skin will lose less moisture. Many heating systems will allow you to install a humidifier onto the system itself, keeping the air in your home from becoming too dry. Other options include using stand-alone humidifiers in the rooms you spend the most time in, or even filling bowls of water and keeping them near heat sources – allowing the water to evaporate into the air.
Drinking lots of water is always good for your skin – actually, it’s good for your entire body to remain hydrated. Remember that, while a nice, hot cup of coffee may warm you up on a cold day, it may also dehydrate you a bit. If you feel thirsty, you’re already beginning to get dehydrated – so keep drinking that water.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
As a general rule, you will use heavier, more nourishing moisturizers in the dry winter months. Both face and body may need to be moisturized more frequently as well.
Bel Mondo masks can help with dry, irritated winter skin. Our Ultra-Hydrating Facial Sheet Masks transfer natural moisturizers, ceramides, and water-binding agents directly to the skin, providing skin with long-lasting hydration. And our Calming Facial Sheet Mask can calm and soothe skin that has become dry, reddened, and chapped by windburn or excessively dry heat. The soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients in our Calming Mask help comfort skin and reduce irritation.
Stay warm; stay hydrated; stay beautiful!
