All of us are more mindful of skin care ingredients these days.
This awareness is especially important for cancer patients and the estheticians who treat their compromised skin.
Which is why we wanted to tell you about the preservatives and actives used in our Moisture Renewal Mask (MRM), as well as how our mask’s signature bio cellulose fabric is produced.
Like the vast majority of sheet masks, Bel Mondo’s MRM has a water-based formula. This means that preservatives have to perform a particularly critical role: killing and inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, which thrive in water.
Multi-Functional Approach
The preservative function in our mask is performed by three (synthetic) ingredients: 1,2 hexanediol, (glycol), hydroacetophenone (a ketone), and disodium EDTA.
We chose these ingredients — considered to be among the most trusted alternatives to paraben-based preservative systems – for multiple reasons.
First, they provide a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. They protect against bacteria, yeast, and fungi.
Second, they are multi-functional. They provide humectant, antioxidant, and anti-irritant benefits.
Third, synthetically-produced ingredients can be made to near purity, greatly reducing the potential for exposure to allergens or other chemicals that may be irritating to skin.
Interestingly, ingredients derived from natural sources are almost never pure; they can contain other chemicals from the plant material, as well as chemicals used during processing.
Fourth, the preservatives contained in our formula have been designated as “safe for use in cosmetic products” by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, and they abide by regulations spelled out in EU Cosmetic Directives.
Equally important for cancer-care patients, our preservative ingredients do not sensitize or add scent.
Meanwhile, the key actives – Pentavitin, ECO CERT Chamomile, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-15, PRODEW 600, and Sea Mayweed – are clinically proven safe humectants and skin conditioning agents that restore moisture, soothe irritation, and strengthen the skin barrier.
Bio Cellulose: Impeccable Safety Profile
Safe ingredients are critical. So is the mask fabric used to transfer them. Bel Mondo develops sheet masks made from bio cellulose, a microbial fiber produced (via large-scale fermentation tanks) in a sterile laboratory environment.

Once our bio cellulose is harvested, it is steam sanitized by autoclave (no chemicals introduced) to assure its purity. Sterile mask fabrics are finished for market in a clean room, and rigorous challenge tests are conducted to verify the safety of our sheet masks. And of course our sheet masks are packaged in sealed sachets, which preclude any opportunity for accidental contamination.
Our goal is always to formulate with verifiably safe and effective ingredients and include them at appropriate concentrations to promote healthy skin. This mission is all the more important to those with compromised skin, and to the skin care professionals who provide them with aesthetic care.
