Most of us make New Year’s resolutions. Usually, these resolutions center around self-improvement – losing weight, exercising more, eating healthier, etc. Rarely do I hear people resolve to take better care of their skin. But they should…
Skin is the body’s largest organ. Skin supports the health and life of all other organs of the body, and helps maintain our immune system. Skin is also a guidepost of our age and health. The younger and healthier we are, the better our skin looks. The reverse is also true: when our skin looks better, we are perceived to be younger and healthier.
Given the importance of our skin, I think it’s only fair that we resolve to take better care of it.
What we put IN our body will show on our skin
It’s important to eat a good variety of healthy foods to get the proper nutrition. It’s also important to stay hydrated. But things like vitamins, supplements, and medications can also affect our skin. Educate yourself on what you are putting in your body and how it will affect all systems in your body – including your skin.
What we put ON our body will show on our skin
We all know the moisturizing is important, and that sunscreen is critical, but how many of us give serious consideration to all of the incidental things that we put on our skin?
The detergents we use to wash our clothes, and the cleaners we use to clean our living spaces – all of those things can have an effect on our skin. Perfumes, dyes, etc. can all affect skin in different ways.
We don’t need to go out and buy the most expensive skin care products and/or the all-natural, organic cleaning supplies for our homes. In fact, for most of us, the things that touch our skin on a daily basis are perfectly fine. But we can all be more educated about what goes on and in our bodies.
