Relaxation techniques

Our lives are stressful. Every day life moves at a frantic pace and work and home time have blurred and well it’s all too much sometimes. But all this makes for very stressed out people. And stress is very bad for your health, your life, and everyone around you. So every so often you need to relax and de-stress. But some of us don’t know how to achieve a stress-free relaxed state….so here are some tips and techniques to help you relax.

1. Focus on the here and now.

Frequently people work themselves into a frenzy worrying about the past or the future. The past is done so let it go. And the future isn’t here yet and it isn’t set in stone. Don’t think about it. OK, that’s probably easier said than done but when you’re actively trying to relax you need to clear your mind. So push the worries, plans, or angst about the upcoming whatever out of your head. At least for 30 minutes…think and live for only the present. Enjoy where you are and concentrate only the now.

2. To adjust your mind, change your environment

Remove yourself from the stressful environment. If you’re freaking out because your desk in piled high with work…leave your office. If your house is messy or the in-laws are visiting, take a drive. Go some place nice. Some place calming that’s away from your stress. Maybe it’s a drive to a park. Perhaps it’s simply a secluded bath while listening to music to drown out the kids fighting. What’s important is that you go to a happy place, not where that place is.

3. Meditation isn’t just for yogis

You don’t have to travel to India and study under a yoga master. In fact, you don’t have to “know how to meditate at all”. The goal is to clear your mind, to reach an inner peace. A good place to start is to find a happy, quiet place and sit, calmly. Concentrate on breathing, inhale deeply and exhale slowly. The important thing is to relax. Or if you really want to meditate correctly read a book….or book a flight to India.

4. Get things done, one at a time

Procrastination is everyone’s enemy. When something isn’t fun or presents a challenge, most of us with put off doing that task or tasks. But this leads to stress. And if you’re stressed you can’t relax. So instead of procrastinating…try prioritizing and get things done one at a time. If you need to clean out the garage….take one item out to the curb, then another, then another.

5. Take a nap

OK…some might consider this too relaxed…or not relaxing at all. But to me a nap can recharge my batteries. And to fall asleep, I usually have to clear my mind and relax. So I think it’s a double win. First I relax…then I nap.

6. Forget about it

If someone said or did something that you can’t stop thinking about…well…stop thinking about it. This one is tough…we’ve all hung up the phone or spoken to someone and their last words linger in our mind and we can’t stop thinking…”what did they mean by that?” Or maybe someone has insulted or slighted you. Most likely you’re going to live no matter what they said or did…so simply forget about it. Or at least forget about it while you’re trying to relax. Just remember, there’s plenty of time for revenge after you’ve relaxed a bit.

7. Do the spa thing

If you can afford it, splurge on a spa day or simply a facial. A spa day can do wonders for most people and it can be a well deserved break from the daily grind. But don’t freak out if you can’t afford a trip to the spa. Today, you can pamper yourself at home. There’s whirlpool tubs and all manner of facial and body treatments. And yes, we’ll suggest our Bel Mondo Beauty Masks as the perfect at home spa treat. So if you can’t go to the spa, bring the spa to you.
