Travel can take its toll on your skin. Whether it’s due to lack of sleep, stress, or simply the dry, stale air you encounter on an airplane, very few people would say they look and feel their best after traveling. But there are a few things you can do to look your best when you reach your destination.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
If you’ve traveled anywhere by plane – even on a short flight – you’ve probably noticed how dry your skin feels afterward. The pressurized cabins have a dehydrating effect, so it’s really important to do all you can to counteract the effect. Moisturize before you get on the plane, drink water during the flight to keep your entire body hydrated (just make sure you don’t overdo it – you don’t want to have to use the airplane restroom any more than necessary). And during your flight, don’t hesitate to apply more moisturizer. Even better, a Bel Mondo Ultra-Hydrating Facial Mask can keep you hydrated and relaxed during your flight.
Maybe you’re traveling to see a romantic interest you haven’t seen in a while, and you want to look stunning – so you put on a full face of makeup before you travel. Not the best idea.
Whether you’re experiencing the drying effects of a flight, sitting on a crowded train, or you are simply driving with the air conditioning on, there are plenty of factors the can keep your makeup from looking fresh when you arrive at your destination. Dehydration, sweating, and air pollution are just some of the things that can take your makeup from “wow!” to “uh-oh.” Plus, if you’re able to nap during your travels, you don’t want to deal with makeup that’s smudged.
Use a tinted moisturizer to put a little bit of color on your face. Avoid mascaras and eyeliners, as they are the most likely to smudge. A long-wearing lipstick may seem like a good idea, but if your lips get dry during the trip this type of lipstick may exacerbate the problem. If you really want color, try a lip stain, and use a clear gloss over it. Reapply the gloss when you get to your destination. A medicated lip balm is another good option, as you can reapply throughout your trip and it won’t rub off your lipstick.
Pay attention to your eyes
The eyes are the window to the soul – or so they say. And the eyes set the tone for the entire face. If your eyes are red from being tired or dehydrated, it won’t matter how the rest of your face looks – the eyes will tell the story.
Keep eye drops with you while you travel, and use them to refresh and soothe your eyes throughout your trip. And a cold cloth with ice can help soothe the puffiness around and under the eyes.
Don’t neglect your hands
Hand cream is another important staple to have while traveling. Your hands are another area that can look and feel dehydrated, so it’s important to keep them moisturized.
Take your skin care products along
Taking great care of your skin is especially important when you’re away from home. Potential lack of sleep, along with a different climate, different food or water – all can have an effect on your skin. So you want to make sure you bring the products you trust.
While it’s not necessary to pack every cream and lotion in your beauty regimen, you’ll want to take along your facial cleanser, as well as your favorite sunscreen, night cream, and eye cream. And, of course, you want to have your foundation with you – you may not be able to find it at your destination, and even if you do, it may be much more expensive.
Just remember that traveling can be stressful – and you don’t want that stress to show on your skin. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water, get quality rest, and take care of your skin.
