Is a Pepto Bismol® “mask” a good idea?

Mask trends come and go. And it seems like some people are willing to try putting just about anything on their face as long as it’s not terribly expensive or outright dangerous. Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz about the skin-clearing effects of Pepto Bismol – used as a mask.

Yes, Pepto Bismol does contain some skin clearing and pore tightening ingredients

Pepto Bismol contains both salicylic acid and aspirin, which can help reduce inflammation, and beta hydroxyl acid, which can help unclog and tighten pores. While several who have tried using the Pepto mask have claimed their skin looks clearer, and that blemishes have lessened, at this point it is simply anecdotal evidence. The anti-inflammatory ingredients in Pepto Bismol will likely offer some blemish-fighting benefits for some people. For others, though, the additional ingredients in the digestive-relief medicine could be irritating to the skin, or simply ineffective.

Plus, several who have written about its effects have mentioned their skin had a “pink cast” after slathering the Pepto Bismol on their skin several days in a row – this is probably not seen as a benefit.

Be cautious. Products not formulated specifically for the skin can be irritating – or worse

It’s tempting to find alternative ways to take care of your skin, especially when high quality skin care can be expensive. And when bloggers post anecdotal evidence of something like Pepto Bismol helping to clear their acne, it’s easy to see why others would want to give it a try as well.

Keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different. Just because Pepto Bismol worked to diminish the acne of an anonymous teenager online doesn’t mean it will work for your adult acne (or any other skin condition). Be responsible with your skin care, and remember to do a patch test when you try any new product on your skin – even if it’s from a reputable skin care company.

Of course, the best course of action is to use skin care products that are specifically formulated for your skin type, as well as any specific skin care concerns you may have (acne, fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, etc.). Keep in mind there are plenty of affordable skin care options that can give you glowing skin – without visiting the antacid aisle at your local pharmacy.
