When you do a web search for green tea, it’s hard to find anyone with anything bad to say about it. It would seem to be a perfect guardian of health: From improving brain function, to reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease, the health benefits of green tea really are impressive.
Green tea – it’s not just for drinking anymore
Drinking green tea, of course, has benefits for your skin and overall health. But in recent years it’s been discovered that green tea extract can be used topically as well.
Animal and human studies using topical green tea formulas have shown a reduction in sun damage – the green tea thwarts free radicals and reduces inflammation. Green tea extract is not a substitute for sunscreen, as it cannot block UV Rays, but it can enhance sun protection.
Topical green tea provides anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, and some studies have shown that participants using a green tea formulation showed improvement in skin elasticity.
Researchers are continuing to study the benefits of green tea – both ingested and applied topically. Bel Mondo currently uses green tea in our Calming Masks for both its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits.
