When we think about getting wrinkles, we typically think about getting older. We already know there are many ways we damage our skin and cause wrinkles – such as spending too much time in the sun. But there are other things we do that can cause us to get wrinkles before our time.
Technology is great! I’m a big fan. But there are some not-so-pleasant side effects of being reliant on so much technology. We know that staring at a computer screen all day can affect our vision. But, between computers and smartphones, we are becoming a society of “squinters.” We tend to furrow our brows when we squint, leading to the small lines/wrinkles between the eyebrows. Combat the squint by increasing brightness and/or type size, and make sure that, if you need glasses or contacts, you wear them.
Yes, it is important to wash your face. Allowing dirt and oils to build up is certainly going to affect your skin in a negative way. But washing your face too frequently, or too harshly, can also cause wrinkles. Washing with a cleanser that is too harsh for your skin can strip away the oils that are necessary to keep your skin healthy and wrinkle-free. Even water itself can strip your skin. Unless you have a specific condition that requires more frequent cleansing, limit washing your face to twice per day.
What?! Getting adequate sleep is one of the “cardinal rules” of keeping your skin looking good. But HOW you are sleeping could be causing your skin to wrinkle prematurely.
Sleeping on your side or stomach with your face against your pillow can cause creases. (you know those funny creases we all sometimes wake up with, that take a while to disappear?) Sleeping like this can, over time cause these creases to turn into permanent lines. Try to sleep on your back if at all possible, or use a silk or similar-fabric pillowcase that is soft and smooth – and allows your skin to “slide” across the fabric, rather than crease.
