Most – but certainly not all – of us tend to experience drier skin in the winter, and less-dry, or even oily skin in the warmer spring and summer months. These environmental changes may necessitate a change to your skin care regimen.
Sun protection should always be a priority
We’ve covered the subject ad nauseum – you should never skip the sunscreen, even in the dreary winter months. Just because the sun isn’t shining brightly in the sky does not mean it can’t be damaging. Even if you don’t end up with a tan – or worse, a sunburn – the sun can be causing damage to your skin.
Of course, it’s also critical to use a sunscreen in the warmer months as well. You’ll likely be spending more time outdoors, so re-application should be factored in as well. Either way, though, sun protection (ideally with an SPF factor of 30 and above) should be a daily consideration – all year round.
In the winter, you may have been using a moisturizing or an oil cleanser in order to avoid stripping much needed oils and moisture from your skin. You may have chosen to cleanse only once per day. Either way, in the winter your cleansing routine was likely more gentle.
Summer cleansing will usually entail gentle cleansers that are not oil-based – in order to remove excess oils and debris that tends to accumulate when we’re sweating and spending more time outdoors.
Again, in the winter your moisturizing routine will likely include some richer creams, and maybe even some oils. Keeping your skin moist and hydrated is of utmost importance when the air is dry.
Summer is typically the time for lighter moisturizers, gels, and lotions – but even though your skin may not feel as dry as it did during the winter, moisturizer is still important. Using a lighter moisturizer will help avoid blocked pores and blemishes.
Not everyone needs to change their skin care routine based on the weather
Some lucky people don’t experience the excessive dryness during winter, nor do they deal with the feeling that their face is going to melt off any second during the heat of summer. If your skin care routine is keeping your skin clean, hydrated, clear, healthy, and protected, there is no reason to make changes. In fact, changing your regimen when it’s not necessary could lead to breakouts or other irritation. In other words, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”
